Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., posted a video on Friday showing herself and her husband, Tim Mynett, walking on a dock over a Minnesota lake. The footage captured the couple smiling and chatting against a backdrop of autumn foliage, ending with a photo montage. In the accompanying text on X, she wrote, "Less scrolling, more strolling. Enjoying our beautiful Minnesota lakes."
The video surfaced days after federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations searched her Washington, D.C., home on Oct. 12, 2026. At the time of the raid, agents seized her passport and cellphone. Omar has not been seen in public for nearly two weeks prior to reemerging in Minneapolis on Friday.
While the visuals depicted a serene stroll, the audio track featured a loud Somali hip-hop song. The lyrics, according to a translation, boast of power and the defeat of opponents. The singer proclaims, "No enemy dares threaten me, wherever I step, they scatter." The track continues, "I have always been the source of their distress."
The song, titled "Nimaan Ciilayba Icaaya," is performed by Ilkacase Qays, who uses the real name Muse Abdikadir. He is described on his website as a U.S.-based Somali singer, rapper, and activist. The track is a duet with Somali singer Hodan Abdirahman. A cultural analysis notes the song relies on Somali lyrical poetry focused on pride, bravery, and personal dignity.
Further lines in the song use aggressive imagery to mock opponents. The lyrics state, "If the just one had felt anger on my behalf, would he not have crushed the enemy underfoot?" Another verse describes rivals as sleeping poorly and weeping in spite because they cannot match the singer. The analysis characterizes these lines as exaggerated imagery used to ridicule opponents.
On Friday, Omar voted in Minneapolis alongside state Attorney General Keith Ellison. The two later attended lunch at the Karmel Mall of Somalia in Minneapolis, where they posed for photographs with community members. It is unclear when the lake video was originally filmed. Omar restricted replies to her social media post, leaving only one public comment visible from former Rep. Cori Bush, who wrote, "We love this."
Omar, whose birth name is reported as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, is under investigation for potential fraud related to immigration paperwork submitted by her or her father during her naturalization process. Her sister, Sahra Noor, was interviewed by federal investigators following the raid, and agents have obtained Omar's DNA. Border czar Tom Homan stated last week that if fraud is proven, Omar could be denaturalized.
