Jordanian authorities have detained three men in connection with a deadly shooting at a Greek Orthodox church. The arrests occurred early Monday morning in the Karak governorate, located south of Amman.
Public Security Directorate officials stated that the three suspects were captured after a shootout at dawn. All three men sustained injuries during the operation, while no security personnel were hurt. Karak is a region with a small Christian population.
The initial attack took place on Friday during a funeral service in the village of Hammoud. Three individuals were identified as the perpetrators at the scene. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, and no armed faction has been accused of carrying it out.
Mazen Al-Faraya, the Interior Minister, confirmed that the three arrested men were responsible for the attack. Speaking in a phone interview with state television, Al-Faraya said, "The security services have fulfilled their duties, resulting in the capture of those who carried out this terrorist act." He noted that the suspects put up fierce resistance before being subdued.
The directorate described the three men as meeting their "just fate" according to reports from Reuters. The agency did not name the suspects or suggest links to specific Islamist militant groups. King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond with "an iron fist" against what he called outlaws of Islam and those attempting to undermine national unity.
