The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series.
The victory marks the seventh consecutive win for the Brewers in the National League Championship Series and the World Series. A win in Game 4 would allow them to become the first team in Major League Baseball history to post an 8-0 record in a single postseason run. The only previous team to sweep both the divisional and championship rounds was the 1976 Cincinnati Reds, which benefited from a five-game series format.
Jackson Chourio led the Brewers with four hits on 16 team hits. The 22-year-old outfielder opened the game with a line drive single, followed by singles in his next two at-bats. He recorded a double in the fifth inning, which was the weakest of his four hits at 99 mph. Chourio finished with two runs and one run batted in through five innings. The Rays recorded only one hit and one run through the first eight innings of the game. They scored their lone run on two hits in the ninth inning.
Chourio became the youngest player to record a four-hit game in the World Series since Joe Garagiola in 1946. He is batting .571 in the World Series with eight hits in 14 at-bats. He has also hit two home runs and stolen three bases in the postseason. In Game 2, he threw out a baserunner at home plate to end an inning.
"Yeah, I think that you could say this is one of my better games," Chourio said after the game. "Really, I was just taking every at-bat like it could be my last and trying to find any way I could to get on base. Because I know, as long as I get on base, there's guys behind me who could score."
Brewers manager Pat Murphy noted that Chourio is developing the discipline required to become a elite player. Murphy compared Chourio's work ethic to that of Kobe Bryant, stating that Chourio is on a similar track for improvement. "He's also played incredible defense, and he stole a base tonight," Murphy said. "He's a total player."
The Brewers held Chourio to 127 games this season due to injury, but he still recorded a 4.9 WAR. He has achieved the 20-20 club in home runs and stolen bases in three separate seasons. Chourio is under contract with the Brewers through the 2031 season, with two club options extending the deal to 2033.
The Rays scored four runs in the first inning of Game 2 but failed to score again in a 5-4 loss. They have not scored in any other portion of the series outside of that initial burst in the second game. The series shifts to Milwaukee for Game 4.
